URB@NE

exists to offer impartial consultancy, advice and support, to communities, social enterprises, voluntary sector, business bodies, sectoral and public sector organisations.

The group was founded in 2012 in response to the Coalition Government’s austerity agenda that systematically dismantled England’s urban regeneration policy framework, abolished regeneration agencies and closed area based regeneration programmes. Consequently, deprived areas are faced with growing needs and diminishing resources, as they struggle to readjust to the post austerity world. It has also been observed that central government has increasingly adopted a ’year zero’ attitude towards knowledge and intelligence, especially with regard to the performance and evaluation of previous policies and programmes. We believe that history does matter, and that there is ’nothing new under the sun’. We should learn from what has gone before, in terms of what works and what doesn’t work. There are valuable lessons to be learned if only we pay regard to the rich legacy of experience, from Tyne and Wear Development Corporation’s ’property-led’ regeneration of the eighties and nineties, through more consensual partnership approaches heralded by City Challenge and the Single Regeneration Budget, to area based initiatives such as the Grainger Town Project, Bridging Newcastle Gateshead Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder and Sunderland ARC Regeneration Company.

URB@NE

adopts a holistic view of urban regeneration using the triple helix model to represent the economic, social and physical pillars of regeneration. We offer capacity building, policy evaluation; bespoke training, advocacy, market intelligence services and a collaborative space for debating, mediating and formulating innovative solutions to regeneration challenges.
